Greens Creek’s Investment in Local Mining Training Programs for Alaskans

Hecla has partnered for 15 years with the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) Center for Mine Training in Juneau, Alaska, donating over $1.8 million to its Pathway to Mining Careers workforce development program as an investment in educating, recruiting, and training Alaskans for careers in the mining industry. Hecla’s support makes an introductory mining operations course tuition-free for 18 students each year. The program targets high school students and enables them to earn dual credits in both high school and college by completing the course.

“This continued partnership between UAS and Hecla Greens Creek means that another generation of Alaskans will have the support they need to start careers in one of Alaska’s most lucrative and vital industries.”

Mining and Petroleum Training Service

Hecla supports the Mining and Petroleum Training Service (MAPTS), a program at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks that introduces underground mining, a culture of safety, and camp-style work. The program leads to full-time employment. We sponsor funding for one mine-trainer each year. Since the program began in 2014, we have placed a total of 72 miners from the MAPTS program into roles at Greens Creek, with five joining our team in 2025.

Internship Programs

Hecla provides internships and summer work opportunities for college students, students from mining and technical schools around the U.S., as well as local schools, to build skills, expand knowledge, and strengthen recruiting efforts. Internships are offered at Greens Creek in Alaska, Lucky Friday in Idaho, and at corporate headquarters in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
